Mild Exercise-Induced Rhabdomyolysis

Abstract

Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterized by the destruction of skeletal muscle, with the release of myoglobin, muscle enzymes and electrolytes into the bloodstream. The causes are diverse, although the most frequent are intense physical exercise, trauma and alcohol consumption.

Objective: To report the clinical characteristics of a case with a long evolution time and direct complications derived from the disease.

Clinical case: We reported the case of a 27-year-old male patient, who has had difficulty performing physical exercises since childhood. In adolescence, when he engaged in vigorous physical activity, he began to experience generalized muscle aches, dark urine, and generalized muscle weakness, which lasted for approximately one to two weeks. He currently is diagnosed with chronic renal failure and worsening of his clinical condition.

Conclusions: Rhabdomyolysis is a rare disease with various causes, the early onset, persistence and severity of the episodes in this patient caused irreversible kidney damage with direct impact on his quality of life.
