Facts during the practice of neurosurgery in Mali

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: A descriptive study was carried out about facts related with the neurosurgery practice in Mali. METHODS: A descriptive study about all patients treated with neurosurgery in Gabriel Touré Hospital (Bamako, Mali) between 2002 to 2004 related with diseases detected, age groups of patients and mortality. Qualitative investigation techniques were applied under participative observation perspective. RESULTS: 348 patients received neurosurgery treatment in this period, general mortality was 6.3%. A chronicle was presented about history of neurosurgery assistant in Mali and some particularities of neurosurgeons job in this country. CONCLUSIONS: Cuban neurosurgery is an essential part of health help of Cuba to Mali, and in same time these interrelations have great impact in professional and human side of neurosurgeon.
