Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To analyze morbidity, mortality and neurological sequel in infancy caused by bacterial acute meningitis.

METHODS: A descriptive and retrospective investigation was performed on patients with bacterial meningitis admitted in Pediatric Hospital of Centro Habana from January 2000 to December 2007. The objective was to determine of: risk factors, clinical features, frequency of bacterial isolation, treatment and complications. The relations of these variables with mortality were stated.
RESULTS: From 57 patients, 29 were confirmed as bacterial meningitis and 28 considered probable cases. Most of the patients survived and only 9 patients died (6 patients younger than 2 years). Predominant age group was 5 to 18 years (23) with 20 younger than 2 years. More than one risk factor was found on 77.7 % of patients. 66.6 % of those who survived showed no risk factors (p<0,00). 81.2 % of survivors had no complications. All died patients had more than one complication. Delayed complications were below 10 % of live patients. Pneumococcus was the bacteria more isolated and it´s associated with high mortality (p<0.05). Ceftriaxone plus vancomycin was used with high efficacy in 65 % of patients (p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Mortality was associated to patient age, other risk factors, immediate complications and causative agent.
