Characterization of Patients with Parkinson's Disease in Neurology Outpatient Clinic

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is a degenerative process. It is the second most common degenerative disorder of neuronal aging after dementia. The cause is multifactorial with variability in its clinical picture.
Objective: To characterize patients with Parkinson's treated in the neurology clinic at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Central Military Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was carried out at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Hospital, from January to May 2023. The sample consisted of 29 subjects. The variables age, sex, manual activity, pathological history, toxic habits, form of presentation, time of evolution, symptoms and intensity were analyzed, according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Evaluation Scale section III, as well as alterations in neuroimaging and complications. Within the statistical analysis, absolute and relative frequencies were used as summary measures. Results: Predominance was found in patients aged between 60-69 years (41.4%), male (58.6%), white skin color (74.4%), pre-university educational level (41.4%), normal weight (51.7%), right handedness (82.2%), personal history of arterial hypertension (48.3%) and hyperlipidemia (44.8%), typical presentation of the disease (55.2%), less than 3 years of evolution (41.4%). Among the non-motor symptoms, prevalence was found in constipation and sleep disturbances (65.5%). 65.5% showed moderate alteration, according to the unified Parkinson's disease assessment scale section III. Brain atrophy was found in 79.3%. Freezing (48.3%) was the most frequent complication.
Conclusions: In the studied population, this study found demographic characteristics and motor and non-motor patterns similar to international registries.
