Before the triumph of the Revolution in January 1959, Neurology in Cuba had not reached any development as a medical specialty. At that time, the country's management sought advice in order to develop these specialties and initially emphasized the training of the necessary human resources. Professor José Rafael Estrada González (1921-1991), a young doctor graduated in 1946 and with solid postgraduate training in Neurology and Neuropathology, was appointed to lead this task, which began with the opening of the Neurology Hospital on January 29, 1962, which later, in 1966, became the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery. The objective of this article was to describe the work of Professor Rafael Estrada as founding director of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and his role in the extension of neurological care and neurosurgical care in the country.
