Abstract

Introduction: Oligodendrogliomas are primary neuroepithelial tumors of the central nervous system. Between 4.8 and 10.6 primary brain tumors are diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants worldwide, which represents 1% of all neoplasias and 2.5% of cancer mortality.

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment used, and postoperative course of a patient with an occipital intraventricular tumor, successfully treated in the Neurosurgery Department of the “General Calixto García” University Hospital.

Clinical case: A 21-year-old patient was diagnosed and treated in the emergency room for decreased vision in the left eye and headache. Computed tomography showed left monoventricular obstructive hydrocephalus at the expense of the occipital horn due to a tumor lesion. Total tumor excision was performed using a combined endoscopic and microsurgical approach, which allowed treatment of hydrocephalus and a positive anthropological diagnosis of grade II oligodendroglioma.

Conclusions: Despite not having the most advanced technology indicated for the lesion in question, total tumor excision was achieved in the case presented, without additional neurological damage.
