Associated factors for cognitive decline in patients with Parkinson's disease

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is a degenerative process. With great diversity in its symptoms, including memory complaints, many patients develop cognitive impairment, even dementia.
Objective: To identify factors associated with cognitive deterioration in patients with Parkinson's disease seen in the neurology department of the "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" Central Military Hospital.
Method: An observational, descriptive study, developed in the outpatient clinic of the neurology service of the Central Military Hospital "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay”, in the period from January 2023 to May 2023. The sample included of 29 subjects. A simple random sampling was carried out. The chi-square test was performed.
Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between cognitive impairment and the following variables: type 2 diabetes mellitus (p=0.004), onset of the disease in the right hemibody (p=0.013), hyposmia (p=0.001), sleep disturbances (p=0.04), Pull test (p=0.037), Leukoaraiosis (p=0.031), hypoalbuminemia (p=0.035).
Conclusions: In the studied population, factors associated with cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson’s disease were similar to those reported in the literature.
