Harvey Cushing on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his death

OBJECTIVE: To describe the most important aspects of Harvey Cushing´s life, as well as, his work "Surgery of the head".
RESULTS: Graduated from medical school in 1895, after traveling to foreing lands, Cushing proposed to divide brain surgery from the rest of surgeries. He is considered the founder of Neurosurgery as a specialty. His merits were recognized with several decorations and awards. His scientific publications were very prolific, integrated by 24 books and 658 articles. One of his centennial writings is "Surgery of the head", which has a relevant validity. Impressive scientific analyses and medical illustrations can be seen in the text.
CONCLUSIONS: Harvey Cushing was an American neurosurgeon of high international prestige. Among his main literary contributions "Surgery of the head" stands out, considered as the most complete text on the specialty, where he comprehensively dealt with all the basic aspects of Neurosurgery and, more than one hundred years after its publication and eighty years after his death, it still has a relevant validity.
